High Tea in Autumn

The Friends Tea House in summer, under a canopy of shady trees

Mid March the Teahouse hosted its first “High Tea” event. Jan Perry and the Teahouse Volunteers had suggested trying something new and thanks to their efforts High Tea has been a great success.

Tables were laid with linen and sweet smelling flowers. To add to the day Jan had sourced a special hand blend of tea, mixed for the occasion. Beautiful china cups were provided and sweet and savory dainties served. Visitors to the Teahouse have offered such positive comments we are now planning for Spring. What a luxury, whiling away an autumn afternoon, cup, saucer and sweet dainty in hand.

The Teahouse operates 7 days a week, relying on the support of 62 enthusiastic volunteers, under the direction of Jan and her assistant Jenny. The team work together in an atmosphere where jokes are shared, stories told and friendships strengthend. The Friends Teahouse offers meals such as the Vegetable Harvest pie and salad a house specialty.

Young mothers and their children are often seen having fun together on the surrounding lawns. Visitors just love the ambience especially those from nursing homes and supported accomodation. As Jan says, they “live with memories of their own”. While some come for a ‘cuppa’ with friends others enjoy a moment of quite contemplation. All just love the beauty of the gardens and go away refreshed and restored.

The Friends Teahouse at the Botanic Gardens is one of Geelong's treasures.
